You’re trying to develop research interests as part of your entry in to the doctoral program, and a specific requirement of this course (i.e., the RDP). The visiting scholars who volunteer to meet and talk with you present an amazing opportunity to hear some (varied) perspectives on what fully-developed research interests and scholarship “looks like.”

For each visitor, think about how they:

  • Talk about their research interests? Is their approach different than yours?
  • Think about of what makes a “good” research question, and where those questions come from?
  • How do they understand what it means to “think like a researcher”?
  • Think about what makes for convincing research, and how to develop a critical perspective?
  • Talk about the nature of academic reading and writing?
